WOMEN WITH WORDS: A Journalism & Music Business Panel

On Thursday, September 24th Livestream Public will host WOMEN WITH WORDS. The panelists will share career advice, dispel rumors, and drop truth bombs. The event is FREE and open to the public. Stream the panel live here!

Laina Dawes is the moderator of the discussion. She is the author of What Are You Doing Here? A Black Woman’s Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal (Bazillion Points, 2012). She is also a music and cultural critic whose writing can be found in print and online magazines, such as BitchSPIN, Cuepoint, Wondering Sound, Flavorwire, Refinery29, MTV Iggy, MySpace, The Wire UKNPRToronto Star and Exclaim! Canada. Laina is currently a graduate student at The New School for Social Research in New York City.

Suzy Exposito is a writer, musician and illustrator based in Brooklyn. Her work has been featured in MTV, Rookie Mag, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. She's authored zines and comics such as Riot Grrrl ProblemsMalcriada, and The Mallgoth Chronicles. She graduated from the New School in 2011 with a BA in Writing and Gender Studies.

Lindsay Zoladz is the pop music critic at New York Magazine. Previously, she was an editor at Pitchfork, where she also wrote Ordinary Machines, a column about music, identity, and the internet. Her writing has appeared in Bitch, Slate, Bookforum, The Believer, and more. She lives in Brooklyn.

Ashley MaGee (aka Black Betty) is a Queens-born, Midwestern-raised DJ/producer, host of Newtown Radio's NO SUGAR, NO C.R.E.A.M. and freelance event producer who got her start at EMI Music Publishing in 2009. She has since helped organize music events for NPR, Joe's Pub, Pitchfork (SXSW, Basilica Soundscape, Northside Festival, Miami's Art Basel & CMJ) and The Fader's Cornerstone Agency. Diane Varnie is the content manager for Solange Knowles' Saint Heron website and the founder of Electric Circus, an artist development consultancy. Having recently appeared in Vogue Magazine as one of "Brooklyn's Finest," Varnie is a go-to for tapping into cutting-edge talent, such as Migos, iLoveMakonnen, OG Maco, Tink and Rae Sremmurd.
